Wippets - Or why I should get off my duff and start writing again!

Memeage via [personal profile] paian and [personal profile] stultiloquentia and [personal profile] synecdochic and... you get the idea. ^_~

Five random snippits from various Works in Progress that I really should get around to finishing (or properly starting, as the case may be.)

1. He wasn't sure how they'd gotten here, or when 'we' and 'I' and 'us' had started to blur the lines of definition-- but here they were and here she was, because suspended above the ground was a glowing, seismic, core of self that was Atlantis. Beside him, around him, within him, were his five other selves-- not counting the heartbeat of the city that pulsed through each of them. (here)

2. "Get out." And the desert is back, full force, the sun shuddering into a thousand brighter echoes of his fury.

"Wake UP." She's still fighting as the sun flakes skin from her arms, burns her retinas to milky white, strips her down to bones and darkness. Because the sun was his armor, his weapon, and she will never ask. (here)

3. She isn't Daniel, who buried a his past under a mountain of sand. She isn't Teal'c who walked from one captivity into another. And she isn't O'Niel, who'd sent Elizabeth and her team through the gate with a blessing akin to a eulogy. (here)

4. "Somewhere in this godforsaken galaxy there's a Bahamas planet," Steven glared grumpily at the ice covered gate. His jacket crackling as he shifted underneath the thin blanket of crusted snow that had accumulated in the past few minutes. "And I'm going to find it."

"You're a geologist," a slightly snowier lump of marine objected, "What on earth would you do on an island?" Trish was somewhat amazed that Matt had managed to acquired quite as much snow as he had. Apparently he's was in some sort of snow collecting competition with Amy and Ant; at this point she could only tell them apart only because of the difference in height.

"I'd study the sand."

"Leeeeetletinyrocks," Amy agreed, a theatrically tiny voice echoing from under the living snowbank. There was a pause. "Wif fangs." (here)

5. If you could have anything, what would it be?

It was only a dream, so what did it hurt? "I want them to live." He swept the whole universe into his hand, galaxy upon galaxy of people who lived and died on someone else's whim. (here)

[BETA REQUEST] WIP: For All The Years That Do Us Harm / And These Cold Comforts Warm (SGA)

UPDATE: Second version of Harm is up, hopefully this will hit a little more on target... although I'm pushing the timeline a bit (considering the transcripts I can find only mention a vague 'some weeks later', it should be long enough.) *crosses fingers*

Semi-final drafts, will do some more poking tonight and see what changes. Hmm. *pokes* Thoughts anyone? Too far off prompt? Still too vague to fit the fandom?

... *pokes Muses*

Anywho, sga_flashfic Crossing Challenge, rough draft 1

SGA:NCIS?

"This is the point where someone says 'Stranger things have happened' and we all laugh ruefully."
"Only they haven't."
"Well not to you--"
"McKay."
"It's not my fault their lives are horribly mundane, honestly, why are we working with these people again?"
"Dead marine." Gibbs snagged the folder out of Rodney's hand, "And I should be asking you that."
"Wraith are an SGC issue."
"Murdered marines are an NCIS issue."
"Yes, but we know what killed him, so what is there to investigate?"
"How about why the Air Force seems to keen on making my life miserable?"
"Technically boss, the SGC--"
"McGee."
McGee shushes.
John grins.
"See Rodney, that's how it's supposed to work."
"I refuse to act like a trained dog just because you think--"
"Enough." Gibbs glares.
McKay glares.
John sighs.
Tony tries very very hard not to smile at the idea there is someone more stubborn than Gibbs, but fails and Ziva baps him.
All is well with the world.

It was only a dream, so what did it hurt? "I want them to live." He swept the whole universe into his hand, galaxy upon galaxy of people who lived and died on someone else's whim.

Not 'us'?

"No." And he didn't have to think, because that was the rule of dreams, they only asked questions you already knew the answer to. "That's not how it works."

And you know how wishes work?

"Yes."

WIP Imaginary Gate Team 5 (Stargate Atlantis)

Sometimes McCravy thinks Earth could use a little predation. A swift kick in the pants for global bureaucracies, reminding them in an ocean as vast as the universe... there's always going to be a bigger fish.

But he knows it's pointless. Faced with Ori, Wraith, Replicators, what have they done? Spun paperwork cocoons to wrap the truth as far away from everyday life as possible. When -not if, but when- the bigger fish finally arrives, Mr. and Mrs. Bystander will be just as unprepared as if Earth hadn't had a decade to set their nets.

PROMPT: Day 19 Prompts: Song/Poem: Beat! Beat! Drums! by Walt Whitman

It's summer, mild enough for open windows and long chatting walks with students fueled by more enthusiasm than wisdom. But enthusiasm wins more battles than it should, and love of history is something to be nourished. He pauses, on the way back up the steps, there is an older gentleman with all the mannerisms of the military, but none of the weariness two world wars imbued.

Blackboards and wax tablets remember what you wrote, long after marks are wiped away. He leans his forehead against cool stone, these walls hold slate not false veneers of paint and plastic, and wonders what would happen if walls could speak.

"Not the best idea, heads and walls, I should know." O'Neil is back, and Indy is tired of telling him to go away. Tired or not, he glares at the intrusion.

"I brought you something this time." O'Neil turns, apparently expecting someone behind him. "Damnit, Daniel, not again. Wait here."

"It's my classroom."

"Right, yes." And he's gone again.

[livejournal.com profile] drabbles Day 14 Prompt: Verb/Action: Returning home

It had been a long day, in a series of long days, and Jack couldn't shake the feeling that any second now something was going to kill them.

The grill sputtered happily beside him,

He'd lured the team out to the cabin, as much from a need to keep them in sight, keep them safe, as much as a chance to unwind.

"I'm getting too old for this." Jack looked out across the lake, having given up all pretense of fishing about the same time Daniel rescued dinner from the grill. Complete coincidence, of course.

"Couldn't agree more." Daniel hands him a plate, and snags a beer from the now half-empty cooler before settling into the other chair.

"No, no, you're suppose to say something comforting." Jack tipped his beer admonishingly.

"Mmm."

Jack raised an eyebrow. "Don't mmm at me young man, kids these days--"

Chaos ensues.

In retrospect-- no, actually, he still had no regrets.

WIP (Labyrinth)

He didn't actually turn the babies into goblins, true innocents were something the magic wouldn't touch. But he never kept them, unless the magic willed it so. Sometimes the Labyrinth was a better life, but not often.

Wicked step-sisters, on the other hand, were fair game. He watched the current questor stumbling valiantly around the maze. They were rarely every truly wicked, but the magic was strict about redemption.

I thought folks might be interested in what constitutes a drabble lifecycle (per my Muses). ^_~ This is everything from the first rough down to the final, plus all the notes in which I poke and prod at the idea until I get it into something I like.

NOTE: This actually took 2-3 days, but I figured I'd just keep updating the original post, to keep it all together. ^_^ (And, of course, I missed the prompt window, so I'm not sure where/if to post it now *sighs*)
