For one dreadful moment Severus thought Albus had finally gone mad. "You--"
"Think he is doing quite well." Dumbledore nodded, whilst helping himself to another lemondrop. "Don't you?"
"Letting students loose in the halls with a basilisk is not anywhere on my list of 'quite well'." Snape growled. "Potter's too important to risk like this."
"Filch is doing exactly what was asked of him Severus." Albus sighed. "You shouldn't underestimate him. Filch or Potter." He paused, "or Mrs Norris, of course."
Snape looked unimpressed.
"Appearances aren't everything." Dumbledore gave him a bemused smile then waved him towards the door.
