LENGTH/RATING: 187 words, PG-13, Ten/Jack (yes it's possible to have PG Slash, now shush)
SUMMARY: Written for [livejournal.com profile] drabbles Day 8 Prompt: Song/Poem: The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, but horribly, horribly too long... *mourns*

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Jack's younger the next time the Doctor sees him, centuries younger and still flaunting that unabashed joy in life he never seems to lose. Time travel plays merry havoc with personal continuums and it's hard not to tell him go away, stay away, stop before she breaks you... because the Jack that was and the Jack that is are nothing but distorted images, ripped to pieces by the weft and weave of time.

But Jack is Jack, warnings will only guarantee the inevitable, so the Doctor turns to leave.

"Do I know you?" There's a hand on his arm and blue eyes, earnestly confused.

"Not yet."

There's the flash of a smile, and it's not what he meant, but it's how Jack takes it, and the Doctor already knows he'll be forgotten, because he's already been forgotten, so what does it matter?

The future can wait, just a little bit longer.

"You want me to what?"

"Just for a day?" Rhys sighed at Ianto's frown. "Just for a morning then? They wouldn't notice the replacement, not the way you cook."

"It's not cooking--

"Some alien gadget then--"

"--it's brewing."

"--and it would be good for them." Rhys proffered the deceptively cheerful tin. "Ianto--"

"You've never seen Jack before his morning cup."

"And I don't want to, trust me on that, I just--"

"Sorry, but asking them to save the world on decaf is out of the question." Ianto crossed his arms, resolutely defending the espresso machine.

"You can cook?" Gwen blinked at the oddly domestic campfire scene.

"Sort of hard to live through the nineteenth century twice and not pick up the habit." Jack grinned, crafting what appeared to be flatbreads.

"I suppose." Gwen unloaded her collected firewood, trying not to wonder where he'd scavenged the supplies. "You've gotten the locator beacon working?"

"I said I know how to cook, never said I liked to."

"Which means no."

"Which means it's time for dinner, soon as Rhys and Ianto get back." He paused to test the stew. "Could be worse: we could be out of coffee."

SUMMARY: Hope. Written for [livejournal.com profile] tw100 challenge 78: To The Last Man

He was going to live forever. Until the oceans boiled and the stars burnt out. Until Utopia, and maybe beyond. Unless something happened, Jack Harkness would outlive time itself; left standing alone at the edge of existence...

And some days he hated Rose, just a little. Hated the TARDIS and the Doctor. Hated time itself for letting them do whatever they'd done, ripping him loose from death-- making him wrong.

Then in the next breath, loved them again. Because 'forever' was full of life, even to the very end, and he had plenty of time to learn how to die.

SUMMARY: "Alice laughed: "There's no use trying," she said; "one can't believe impossible things." "I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." Alice in Wonderland

Captain Jack Harkness was the kind of person who could say 'To infinity and beyond!' not only with a straight face, but with an unwavering faith that made you stop and wonder if maybe he wasn't kidding after all.

There were days, back when 'Torchwood' meant 'Torchwood One', and not the Hub, that his devotion had been more worrisome than encouraging. There were believers and then there were believers, and no one was quite sure where Jack's fervor stood. But now, when Torchwood was a shadowed memory of itself, his fire was what kept them going.

To infinity, and beyond.
