I'm working on GT5 and since they are (almost) all Marines I figured I'd better do a little digging. ^_^

Average Time to Promotion for each grade:
* Private First Class (E-2) - 6 months
* Lance Corporal (E-3) - 14 months
* Corporal (E-4) - 26 months
* Sergeant (E-5) - 4.8 years
* Staff Sergeant (E-6) - 10.4 years
* Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) - 14.8 years
* Master Sergeant/First Sergeant (E-8) - 18.8 years
* Master Gunnery Sergeant/Sergeant Major (E-9) - 22.1 years
(per About.com)

So, we have Ant who was in his first year of residency when he left doctoring to become a Marine. Since he is now an E-5, that would make his math:
Age entering college = 16 (he was a smart fella)
College = 4yrs
Medical School = 4yrs
Residency = 0.something
E-5 = 4.8 years
So he is currently: 16 + 4 + 4 + 0.5 + 5 = 29ish

Now Steven (bless his heart) has a dual-doctorate. So he's:
Age entering college = 18
College = 4yrs
Average time to a Doctorate = 7.9 years x 2
So our Emergency Backup Geek is 18 + 4 + 8 + 8 = 38ish. Although I might be nice and say his second doctorate only took 6 years, but he's still the old fogey for now. *grin*

Matt, lover of things that go BOOM! and our Crypto-linguist is an E-6. Since he went straight into the Marines, did not pass GO and did not collect $200 he is currently 18 + 11 = 29, roughly the same age as Ant.

Trisha, is a more interesting problem. When I first build her she had been enlisted and was promoted to officer whilst stationed at Atlantis. I think the Marines allow field-grade commissions, but I can't find any info on it online. Apparently the Army is the only one with a set Green-to-Gold program (i.e. Enlisted-to-Officer). Hmmm. She'll be the same age as Matt, but maybe a year or two older.

Amy, our beloved Undeclared Major turned Marine is the baby of the bunch. She joined the marines half-way through her Freshman year which makes her 19 and is only a E-5. So she's 19 + 4.5 = 24ish!

Which makes you wonder about the ages of the canon Marines, but hey, they had no problem sending Jack out every other week, so I guess age isn't an issue for the SGC. ^_~

Anywho, so now we know about how old they are, but how many people are they in charge of? This is where things get tricky

Corporal : Fireteam consisting of three other marines.
Sergerant : Squad consisting of three Fireteams.
Lieutenant : Platoon, which can consist of three or four Squads.
Captain : Company, usually consisting of four Platoons
Lieutenant Colonel : Battalion = four Companies (700 to 900)
Colonel : Regiment, often consisting of four Battalions (2,800 to 3,600)
(per Wikipedia)

So technically I could down-grade GT5 without running into problem. *ponders* Although their setup was Trisha (LT) -> Matt (SSgt) -> Amy/Ant (Sgt). But a good portion of the reason my guys got tapped to go was for their extra skillsets. There's no way Matt could have mastered both his MOS as a Sgt or a Cpl... and I can't see Amy or Ant staying low rank for very long. *ponders*
